Karachi: The first phase of the Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme (K-IV) project is expected to be completed by 2025, as reported on June 10.

According to sources, significant progress is being made on this crucial project, with Stage-1 set to provide 260 million gallons per day (MGD) of water to Karachi. The second phase of the project will supply an additional 390 MGD to the city. Once both stages are complete, a total of 650 MGD will be supplied to Karachi. The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) is overseeing the execution of this project. The total cost of the K-IV project is PKR 126 billion, with over PKR 40 billion already spent.

The K-IV project was initially approved in 2014 by the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) government at an estimated cost of PKR 25.552 billion. The project was to be jointly funded, with a 50% contribution from the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) government. In the 2014-15 budget, PKR 849 million was allocated for the project.
