Karachi: K-Electric has decided to launch a massive drive against its defaulters and those found engaged in power theft from January 21 onwards, according to a news source. The company is also actively spreading the word in the form of newspaper ads and TV commercials.

According to one of the notices relayed by K-Electric in local newspapers, the defaulters are advised to clear their bills through convenient payment plan, while the power thieves are told to acquire regular electricity connections by giving a call on their helpline 118 or by visiting the nearest customer care centre. Those failing to do so by January 20 will face penal consequences.

The non-discriminatory crackdown will be carried out citywide, where the company will use all legal measures to strictly enforce its rules. The campaign is in line with the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act of 2016. According to this law, those found engaged in power theft as well as the others not agreeing to clear their pending dues on instalments can be fined at PKR 6 million and face jail imprisonment for seven years.
