Lahore: Officially inaugurated on Wednesday, the 50 MW Jhimpir wind power project has started commercial operations, according to a news report. This project is located in Gharo-Keti Bandar wind corridor, which is an ideal place for wind power projects and has the potential to generate a significant amount of renewable and affordable energy.
Combined with solar power, the Jhimpir project can greatly reduce Pakistan’s reliance on fossil fuels as a source of energy. The project is funded by the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), the development financing institution of the US Government, which has financed 5 projects in Pakistan, generating a total of 250 MW. This initiative was hailed as a positive step towards the goal of producing 5 % of the nation’s electricity through renewable resources by 2030.
