Rawalpindi: The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), Rawalpindi has prepared a project proposal designed for the provision of six million gallons (of water) per day (mgd) to the residents of the city — with the project expected to be developed in collaboration with Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA), according to a news report.

As per the sources within WASA, the JICA will provide the required funds for the project in the form of a grant. Under this project, a water pipeline will be laid between the Rawal Dam Filtration Plant and Rawalpindi, which will provide an additional six million mdg of water to the city. The existing pipelines used for this purpose were originally laid in 1967, and thus have deteriorated over time.

The installation of a new water pipeline will reduce Rawalpindi’s dependency on underground water, which is extracted through tube wells. This method is both dangerous, in terms of reducing the water table, and expensive, as these tube wells are usually operated using electricity. In short, the proposed water pipeline will not only help WASA meet its water requirements, but also cut-down on expenses otherwise accrued on electricity bills.
