Islamabad: Japan will donate USD 5 million to Pakistan for the Emergency Flood Assistance Project, the news sources reported on March 1.

The funds will be used by the government to expand the scope of the original project, particularly to support:
- Urgent provision of climate-resilient seeds for staple crop cultivation
- Women-led livelihoods to meet basic household needs
In this regard, an agreement was signed between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Country Director Yong Ye and the Ministry of Economic Affairs. As per the press release, the grant is offered under the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific (JFPRAP), which is administered by ADB under the Emergency Flood Assistance Project (Additional Financing). The grant is in addition to the funds allocated by Japan for immediate assistance for flood affectees in Sindh and Balochistan and will be used through third-party organisations and United Nations (UN)-associated relief funds.

It is important to note that a devastating flood in August last year displaced nearly 30 million people. As per the government account, this has resulted in an economic loss to the tune of USD 30 billion.
