Islamabad: The Japanese government on Wednesday (December 7) announced USD 38.9 million in assistance to flood victims across the country, news sources reported.

The government will receive aid in flood-affected regions for services such as emergency medical assistance, food distribution, farm and livestock restoration, livelihood creation, and gender-based violence risk reduction and response.
According to a statement issued by the Japanese government, the relief funds will be distributed to victims in Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Punjab provinces, as well as the Islamabad Capital Territory, in collaboration with international aid and rehabilitation organisations such as WHO, UNFPA, FAO, UNDP, UNICEF, WFP, UNWOMEN, UNHCR, and IPPF. The funding is in addition to the USD 7 million donated by Japan immediately following the flood in September, as well as the USD 4.7 million provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

It is worth mentioning that Japan, through its JICA program, has pledged and implemented several development projects in the country, including water and sanitation projects in Faisalabad and Sialkot. Japan is also a major contributor to Pakistan’s poverty-reduction initiatives.
