Islamabad: The Japanese government has announced its decision to offer an additional aid package of USD 1 million to Pakistan to equip both locals and Afghan refugees in their fight against the raging coronavirus pandemic, according to news sources. The funds will be channeled through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

With this grant, the UNHCR will be enabled to equip the country – based on its independent assessments of ground conditions; as per the Japanese government’s request – with essential equipment and technical assistance in its efforts to contain the coronavirus spread.

Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan Matsuda Kuninori, while commenting on this development, appreciated the federal government’s efforts to prevent the viral spread and said that it was time for the international community to become involved and take necessary steps.
Previously, Japan has offered USD 2.41 million to support Pakistan’s battle against the local viral outbreak. Around USD 1.62 million of this sum was given through the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), USD 540,000 through the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), and USD 250,000 through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
