Islamabad: The Japanese government has announced its decision to provide grant assistance of USD 19 million to install a weather surveillance radar facility in Sukkur, according to a news report published on January 26.

According to details, several of these facilities have already undergone upgradation in Islamabad and Karachi. Another one, for which the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has agreed to provide the funds, will be established in Multan.
To facilitate this measure, JICA’s Chief Representative in Pakistan Furuta Shigeki and Economic Affairs Division Joint Secretary Syeda Adeela Bokhari ‘signed the grant agreement on implementation of the project.’

The said utility will be developed in Sukkur to bridge the gap for weather surveillance in a bid to cover 90% of the country. This radar is expected to contribute towards mitigation of damages caused by natural and hydro-meteorological disasters.
