Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Farrukh Rashid said that there is a need to construct 21 overhead crossings on the Islamabad Expressway. He added that these infrastructure facilities would help address traffic issues in the capital city.
He informed that the expressway, which is a 27km long artery, has only five bridges. These overhead crossings cannot accommodate a huge influx of commuters who cross from Faisal Mosque to Rawat, and vice versa on a daily basis.
SSP Rashid said that the traffic police have identified areas which lack said infrastructure facilities and where a number of accidents are reported on daily basis. The existing overhead bridges and underpasses cannot accommodate such a huge number of people, he added.

He requested the civic agency to address the issue on an immediate basis in a bid to avoid future accidents and ensure smooth flow of traffic. Moreover, he said that pedestrian crossings and underpasses should be constructed after a distance of every one kilometre on major road networks such as the Kashmir Highway and Murree Road.
