Islamabad: The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) recently announced that the previously dire water situation in the dams had significantly improved after the recent spell of monsoon rains in July, according to a news source. Previously, it had attributed the low water levels persisting till June to climate change.
The authority’s Sindh member Mazhar Ali Shah briefed the Senate Standing Committee on National Food Security about the situation. He made these statements during a meeting chaired by Senator Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah at the committee room of the Parliament House.
He said that the dams received most of their water supply from snowmelt; but this year, the temperature did not hit the certain level. Therefore, water level in the rivers had remained scarce till June 15.
Once the rains started, he added, the water levels rose and the provinces received sufficient supply for their requirements. He also revealed that the Tarbela Dam had almost reached its storage capacity and the Mangla Dam would reach its limit with a few more rains.
