Islamabad: The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has demanded the construction of two mega dams in addition to building Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand Dams, as per a news source. The demand has been put forth to deal with shortage of water available for the agriculture sector.
According to IRSA Director Operations Khalid Idrees Rana, a 40% shortfall of irrigation water is dreaded for Rabi season, which starts on October 1. The information was shared in a meeting attended by provincial representatives of WAPDA and Metrological Department. Rana told the media that IRSA will now be working to supply water to the stakeholders according to their average needs.
The members of the meeting were told that the water situation in the country is quite severe, where the shortfall can be reduced if rain falls in December and January. IRSA will hold another meeting on Monday to discuss the suggestions put forth by the committee members.
