Islamabad: The advisory body of the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has suggested that at least two mega-dams should be built to deal with water shortage in the country, according to a news source. The advisory body met on Thursday, and projected a 31% shortage in Kharif sowing season due to heavy wastage of water and less inflow into rivers.
This shortage was predicted to be 31% for Punjab and Sindh, the two major agricultural provinces, with Baochistan and Khyber Pakhtunwa not being affected by water supply in the Kharif season. However, this shortage would come down to 10% in late Kharif season for Punjab and Sindh. The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) told the committee that sedimentation levels in Tarbela and Mangla dams were increasing, which would reduce their water storage capacity. The committee emphasised on the need for more dams to stave off the threat of water scarcity. This meeting was chaired by IRSA’s chairman and attended by representatives of WAPDA and all provinces.
