Islamabad: Teams from the Punjab Irrigation Department’s Small Dams Organisations (SDO) have been tasked with cleaning the Rawal Dam’s polluted water reservoir, according to a news source. Rawal Dam is the primary source of water supply for Rawalpindi, and has been polluted due to improper waste dumping practices from the residential areas of Murree, Bani Gala, and the surrounding settlements.

A representative from the SDO stated that this water pollution can be attributed to the mushrooming growth of residential areas around the reservoir that lack any proper waste management systems. The relevant authorities and stakeholders are making the appropriate plans to remedy this situation, whereas SDO’s waste collection teams are working around the clock to clear surface blockage caused by water pollution.

The planned measures include the installation of five sewage treatment plants in different locations, as the pollution accumulates from Murree onwards in a downward direction. There is also a proposal to hold waste management awareness sessions for the relevant stakeholders and residents of the area.
