Lahore: The Punjab government has approved a proposal presented by the Punjab Industrial Estate Development Management Company (PIEDMC) for the conversion of the Chunian (Kasur) Industrial Estate Project into an aqua business park, according to news sources. The industrial estate is located near Bhai Pheru, 40-kilometre away from Lahore.

The Chunian (Kasur) Industrial Estate Project will be converted into Pakistan’s first seafood species breeding ‘Chunian Aqua Business Park’. The said development surfaced after it was discovered that the land acquired for the industrial estate was unsuitable for an industrial estate, given the rising saline groundwater table.

As per the sources, the company executed soil tests on the land acquired for PKR 350 million, it was revealed the groundwater table is lying just up to 10 ft or above – which rendered it unsuitable for the development of the industrial estate. However, some studies were later conducted that declared the area suitable for ‘breeding, growing and exporting seafood species, particularly crab, prawn and shrimp’. Moreover, the land appeared feasible for fish farming, which is why it was decided to add fishing to the project for local consumption. The produce from the park will be marketed at a nearby proposed mega fish market project on Multan Road – after the existing Lahore’s Lohari Gate fish market is shifted there.
