Islamabad: The government is looking to increases taxes on non-filers in an attempt to widen the tax net, said Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Revenue Haroon Akhtar Khan, according to a news report. Khan was part of a pre-budget seminar oraganised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP).
Talking to people attending this seminar, Khan said that measures are being taken to identify those with high incomes so that they can also be brought into the tax net. In this regard, data of those who travel by air frequently is being gathered through records of Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority.
He also mentioned that the formulation of valuation tables by the Federal Board of Revenue was a major step which brought the property sector into the tax net. Khan also said that an amnesty scheme for offshore assets will be announced as the laws for holding offshore assets are being tightened. He also reaffirmed that no new taxes will be imposed in the budget 2018-19.
