Islamabad: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Information Technology (IT) Member Asim Ahmed on Wednesday notified during a press briefing that the country’s Income Tax Law prevented the board from sharing taxpayers’ information; therefore restricting it from transferring third-party information to the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), according to news sources.

Previously, NADRA had sought FBR’s third-party data that includes property, telecom, travelling, vehicles, utility, credit card and banking among other information – with an aim to determine the predictive tax liability of short-filers and tax evaders.
Moreover, Ahmed also stated that NADRA could change its minimal fee as service provider to the FBR, after its data integration completes with the authority. However, the exact fee will be determined once the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is signed.

As per the sources, FBR has been working to formulate a database with other stakeholders’ assistance and the enabling clause for this purpose was made part of the Finance Act 2020 – with the parliament’s approval. However, the authority has now clarified that it cannot share data with any other institute – including NADRA.
