Islamabad: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Sunday (September 18) announced support for the relief and reconstruction activities in the country’s flood-hit areas, news sources reported.

The IMF’s resident representative in the country, Esther Perez Ruiz, announced in a statement that the IMF, in partnership with the international community, will seek to build a relief mechanism. The assistance will be provided under the present arrangement with the government. According to the statement, the IMF recognises the ground developments and losses caused by the massive flood and will cooperate with the Pakistani government to meet the requirements and provide relief.

It is imperative to highlight that Pakistan has been plagued by major monsoon-caused floods, which have inundated roughly one-third of the country and cost up to USD 30 billion in infrastructure damage and crop losses. The government has also raised concerns about the spread of post-flood diseases and poverty and has asked the international community to assist those in need.
