Karachi: The Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD) has expressed grave concerns over the presence of illegal and dilapidated buildings in Karachi. ABAD Acting Chairman Sohail Warrind further stated that these constructions pose serious life threats to millions of people residing in these flats.

He expressed his views on the matter during a media briefing. He stated that the Sindh government should address this issue on a priority basis. ABAD has expressed its reservations in the past regarding low-quality building material used in various high-rise residential projects in Karachi.

Warrind expressed his sorrow over the loss of lives in buildings that had collapsed in Karachi and Sukkur last week. He also mentioned that these buildings were constructed without prior approvals and NOCs from the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), while the developers did not adhere to building codes during the construction of these structures.

Last year in December, Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah had announced the provincial executive’s decision to form a committee with an aim to curb illegal construction activity in the province and to ensure that the developers follow safety standards during their construction efforts.

ABAD acting chairman lamented that there hasn’t been any progress in setting up the committee ever since.
