Islamabad: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has summoned the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to explain why Rawal Lake is extremely polluted, according to a news report. The IHC Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui has taken up petitions filed by Pir Fida Hussain and a local resident, complaining about the polluted water levels in the lake.
According to the petition, sewerage from areas of Bani Gala, Bhara Kahu, Malpur, Phulgran, and various other surrounding areas are continuously drained into the lake which is causing pollution. The petitions further talk about the toxic waste from as many as 170 poultry farms along the Koran River, which is also dumped into this lake. To this, the CDA Legal Advisor Amir Latif Gill said that sewerage from the diplomatic bloc ultimately also ends up in the lake, contaminating the water. Justice Siddiqui has remarked that this is hazardous for both humans and animals living in the lake.
For this, Justice Siddiqui has directed the CDA to submit a report with satellite images of encroachment on catchment areas of the lake. The court has also asked for details regarding illegal activities near Rawal Lake and directed the CDA to explain to court why pollution of this level has persisted.
