Islamabad: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has ordered that 24 cooperative housing societies change their names and refrain from using government agency and department names, according to news reports. The deputy commissioner (DC) of Islamabad said that implementation cells would be set up soon to facilitate residents and owners of the societies during the shift.

As per sources, in response to the IHC decision, the Islamabad DC, who is also the registrar of cooperative housing societies, will issue instructions to the circle registrar Cooperative Housing Societies today (Monday). The housing societies have been given three weeks to alter their names, or legal action would be launched against them. The orders will be issued under Section 16-A of the Cooperative Housing Societies Act and will be followed by a name change in CDA records as well as the district administration’s Circle Registrar Office. According to CDA Spokesperson Asif Shah, the cooperative housing societies’ administration would be given time to call annual general body meetings (AGMs) to choose names by popular vote. If the society’s administration is unable to act, the registrar Cooperative Housing schemes will dissolve the society’s management and convene an AGM to debate on and adopt a new name.

It should be noted that the current directions are relevant to the IHC rulings made on the subject in 2020. The new instructions, however, have made the name change mandatory, and the ICT administration has been instructed to follow directions in letter and spirit within the three-week time frame specified in the IHC ruling.
