Lahore: Hydroelectric power stations, owned and operated by the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda), generated 7,500 MW of electricity, the highest ever produced in Pakistan, according to a news report. As per an official statement, Wapda’s hydroelectric power plants supplied 7,571 MW and 7,513 MW to the national grid during peak hours on September 16th and 17th, respectively. This was an increase of about 1,000 MW compared with the same time period in previous years.
This has been possible because of Tarbela Dam’s 4th extension project and the Neelum-Jhelum hydroelectric power project. Overall, Wapda owns 19 hydel power stations which have a cumulative generation capacity of 6,902 MW. In addition to this, three new hydro-electric power projects have been added to the national grid, increasing capacity by a total of 2,487 MW.
