Lahore: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has barred the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) from pursuing the commercialisation of additional plots in the Wapda Cooperative Housing Society (WCHS) — a news source reported on July 23. The court gave these directives while hearing a petition against the commercialisation of property in the society.

The lawyers of the petitioner, WCHS and LDA all attended the hearing. The LHC has temporarily barred the commercialisation of further plots, and issued notices to the LDA Director General among others to submit their replies on the matter.
During the hearing, Justice Atir Mahmood stated that excessive commercialisation had caused traffic issues everywhere. In addition, the advocate for the petitioner contended that there were no sections in the LDA Act that allowed the development authority to commercialise residential plots in private housing societies.

Justice Mahmood also reprimanded the authorities concerned for violating basic rights of the housing society’s residents. The LHC also declared that the previous commercialisation of plots in the WCHS was now invalid.
