Karachi: Mayor Wasim Akhtar on Wednesday inaugurated the extension project of a graveyard in Azeempura, which is located in Shah Faisal Colony, a news source reported. While talking to the press, he requested the help of the city administration to retrieve land earmarked for the development of graveyards. The mayor stated that the operation could only be conducted with the help of the police, rangers and anti-encroachment staff of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).

The Azeempura graveyard was being extended after four acres was recovered from the hold of land grabbers. This will provide space to create 5,000 more graves. The extension project is being conducted at the cost of PKR 17 million. Rates of PKR 9,000 for one adult grave and PKR 6,000 for one child’s grave have been fixed.

Graveyards were being extended for the first time since 1990 because it had become an immediate need of the city, he added. The KMC recently carried out extension of graveyards in Mohammad Shah and Chakra Goth. Akhtar said that there was a need for a big cemetery in each district of the city for which the provincial government needed to provide land.
