Islamabad: Karakoram Highway Phase-II – Havelian-Thakot Road – was awarded the best Bridge/Tunnel Award at the 9th annual Engineering News-Record (ENR) Global Best Projects competition, according to news published today (October 1).

As per the details shared, the said road is a major connecting project executed under China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The project won the award for its quality construction and outstanding design. According to the Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Nong Rong, CPEC encompasses the best tunnels and bridges in the world.
Sharing details about the project, Havelian-Thakot road is a 118-kilometre-long connectivity project. For which, the commercial contract was signed in December 2015, between China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and National Highway Authority. The project was executed by China Communications Construction Company Ltd, at the cost of USD 1,315 million.

Moreover, the connectivity project comprises 105 bridges, including 3 small, 42 medium, and 60 large bridges. The project also features 6 tunnels: 4 in the Class-II Highway, and 2 on the expressway.
