Gwadar: China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority Chairman retired Lt Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa stated on Monday that the PKR 300 million port infrastructure work has been completed and all the berths are operational, according to news sources. The project was undertaken by China Overseas Port Holding Company (COPHC).

Talking to the media, Mr Bajwa said that the first phase, spreading over 60 acres of land, has been completed. So far, 47 enterprises have been registered and six factories have been completed; out of which 3 are operational. While six are under construction.
Shedding light on the second phase of Gwadar Free Zone (GFZ), Mr Bajwa said that the investors are willing to invest USD 3 billion which will help in creating 30,000 jobs. He also revealed that the Eastbay Expressway will transport the cargo from port city to M-8 for shipping across the country. He further added that 94% of work on the expressway is complete and the inauguration is expected in September.
In addition to this, work on Gwadar Airport is underway and city vocational institutes will be completed by the end of October. Also, the master plan of Gwadar City has been approved and is in the implementation stage.
According to the Authority Chairman, the Gwadar Port, and GFZ after being operational, will generate economic activities worth USD 10 billion yearly and will also create thousands of jobs.

Officials also mentioned that the port has handled 67,000 tonnes of cargo, which was transported to Afghanistan. He also added that port handling capacity is being enhanced and a good customs system is in place.
