Gwadar: The Gwadar Development Authority (GDA) has designated 2025 as the “Year of Gwadar” to mark the initiation of three landmark projects under the Gwadar Smart Port City Master Plan, which concludes its first phase (2017–2025).
This announcement followed a high-level GDA meeting chaired by Chairman Shafqat Anwar Shahwani, where key decisions were made, including the expansion of Gwadar’s urban development area to 118.0 square kilometers and the connectivity of the East Bay Expressway to the New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA).
The Gwadar Smart Port City Master Plan, jointly approved by Pakistan and China during the 9th JCC meeting on November 5, 2019, is the driving framework behind these developments. According to a GDA official, the three major projects include the Central Business District (CBD), Gwadar Special Economic Zone (GSEZ), and NGIA.
The Central Business District, covering 12.3 square kilometers with an estimated cost of Rs 84–90 billion, is expected to see significant progress in 2025. This 10-year development project is projected to generate Rs 400 billion in profit. To address environmental sustainability, plans include the establishment of a solar park and other energy solutions to meet Gwadar’s power needs.
The Gwadar Special Economic Zone (GSEZ) aims to foster trade through the creation of tax-free zones, driving local economic growth and generating employment opportunities. These transformative initiatives signal Gwadar’s emergence as a pivotal hub for regional and international trade.
