Lahore: NESPAK Managing Director (MD) Dr Tahir Masood on Wednesday stated that the Gulpur Hydropower Project had started contributing electricity to the national grid, a news source reported. He added that after obtaining the due certification for commercial operation, the project had commenced with adding cheap electricity to the network.

According to the details available, the Gulpur Hydropower Project is a run-of-the-river hydroelectric generation plant. It is located on the Poonch River, which is a major tributary of the Jhelum River near Gulpur in the Kotli District of Azad Kashmir. The project received its financing from the Korea Axim Bank, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Islamic Development Bank, and the ECO Bank. Additionally, NESPAK provided the consultancy services and technical support required for the completion of the project.

Sources revealed that the project was developed as part of the federal government’s Policy for Power Generation Projects 2002, as adopted by Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) at a cost of PKR 52 billion. They added that the plant has the capacity to generate an average annual energy of 102 Megawatts (MWs).
