Rawalpindi: The National Highway Authority (NHA) has renamed the Grand Trunk Road (GT Road)’s portion that connects Rawat T-Chowk with Kutchery Chowk, a news source reported on March 21. As per the notification issued by the NHA, this part of GT Road portion is now called Potohar Avenue.

Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chattha mentioned this in a meeting held to review the progress work on the uplift of Potohar Avenue. Addressing the meeting members, he said that Potohar Avenue will be uplifted to highlight the culture of the region.
The commissioner further revealed the peri-urban union councils of District Rawalpindi and the area from Soan River Bridge to the Toyota Company Showroom now fall under the administrative control of Rawalpindi District. The administration has been directed to focus on traffic management, cleanliness, and removal of encroachments in this area.

The news source disclosed that in the anti-encroachment operation that started on February 24, the focus is to clear these peri-urban union councils. In the first phase of the anti-encroachment operation, notices were served in all areas. In the second phase, fines were imposed. So far, PKR 700,000 has been imposed in terms of fine. In the third phase, FIRs will be registered against the violators and their items being displayed on footpaths, roads, and streets will be confiscated.
