Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Monday (September 28) chaired a meeting of the newly-constituted Provincial Coordination & Implementation Committee (PCIC) during which he was informed of the Malir Expressway project’s groundbreaking in October, according to a news source.

Karachi Corps Commander Lt Gen Humayun Aziz and Planning and Development (P&D) Chairman Mohammad Waseem were also present at the session. The P&D Chairman gave a detailed briefing regarding various mega development projects undergoing in Karachi.
According to reports, the Malir Expressway project is being developed with a budget of PKR 27 billion and will be launched under a public-private-partnership (PPP) model.
The meeting was informed that the 27-kilometre-long Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Green Line project will be completed by June 2021. The Sindh government has also launched the 4.7-kilometre-long BRT Orange Line project, scheduled for completion by June 2021. As for the 21-kilometre-long Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Yellow Line project, it will be completed at a cost of PKR 61.44 billion.

Furthermore, the meeting was informed that seven stormwater drain schemes would be launched at a cost of PKR 258.7 billion in a bid to clear the rivers and nullahs of Lyari, Malir, Gujjar, Mehmoodabad and Orangi. The DHA Karachi stormwater drainage issues were being resolved under a PKR 10 billion scheme. The stormwater drain project was communicated to be 60% complete by July 2021 and the remaining work was said to be completed by July 2020. The meeting also discussed various settlements for compensation of the affected people.
Other projects discussed included water supply projects in the city, solid waste management, sewerage treatment and five Combined Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) for industrial areas of Karachi.
