Islamabad: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reform Asad Umar has announced the government’s intention to host the groundbreaking of the first special economic zone (SEZ), developed under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project framework, in December – a news source reported.

According to Umar, the government is focused on the development of the SEZs to increase industrialization and provide more jobs in the country. Earlier on Thursday (November 28), the federal minister held meetings with various economic ministries to review work progress on CPEC. He directed the ministries and all related departments to expedite development work pace on SEZs.

Further, Umar emphasized that effective evaluation and monitoring of projects launched under the CEPC is vital for ensuring their timely completion. With regard to the development plan for the second phase of CPEC, he said that development of value chains and business linkages and enhancement of economic cooperation would remain the government’s focus.
