Karachi: Sindh Governor Imran Ismail on Sunday announced that a milestone has been achieved with the arrival of 40 buses for the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, according to news sources. As per the details shared, the dedicated corridor will serve the most populated areas of the city. In the first phase, the Green Line BRT will cover Surjani Town to Gurumandir and Numaish Chowrangi.

Sharing details about the Green Line BRT buses, Sindh Infrastructure Development Company Limited (SIDCL) CEO Nadeem Lodhi stated that the buses are low-entry 18-metre Articulated Diesel-Hybrid self-charging technology, which is eco-friendly. All the buses are equipped with Modern Intelligent Transport System (ITS) with features such as real-time passenger information, auto doors, surveillance cameras, and an automatic location system. Additionally, the fleet includes air-conditioning, space for advertisement, digital screens, and comfortable modular seats. It will cater to people with special needs and will benefit the environment.
The governor disclosed that the second consignment of 40 buses is expected to reach the city next month. It was highlighted that the first phase of the project will be operationalised by the end of November this year. The governor appreciated the efforts of Sindh Infrastructure Development Company Limited (SIDCL) to make sure the project will be completed within a stipulated time. According to Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar, Green Line BRT is a technologically advanced transport system that encompasses a 22km corridor that will improve mobility for 135,000 passengers on a daily basis.

He went on to say that a comprehensive command and control centre had been created for various transport projects including Orange Line, Green Line, Yellow Line, and others. It was mentioned that a bus depot was developed for 80 buses and 22 bus stations were constructed. Moreover, the minister informed that the commercial operations of the buses will start within the next two months after training of drivers and installation of software. The stations and tracks have already been completed. He went on to say that it is the first project under Karachi Transformation Plan, while the other five are in pipeline.
