Islamabad: The Climate Change Ministry is in talks with the provincial governments to introduce green building codes to promote eco-friendly housing societies in the country, according to a news story published on Thursday (March 3).

As per the details, the federal government has asked the provincial governments to make it mandatory for the societies to allocate 30% of their land to green spaces. The housing societies can introduce green building codes that will help combat environmental degradation such as developing sustainable sites, reducing waste & emissions, improving indoor environmental quality more efficiently, increasing water and energy efficiency.

According to an official (whose name was not disclosed), the eco-friendly approach will mean that the building or house is built using materials and technology that decreases carbon footprint and consume less energy. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam disclosed that the best international practices must be used to protect the natural environment. With the green building codes, the ministry is trying to increase tree cover and improve air quality.
