Islamabad: Ministry of Water Resources Secretary Mohammad Ashraf on Thursday informed the Senate Standing Committee on Water Resources about the government’s decision to install a telemetry system on the country’s dams and canals in its bid to ensure water distribution transparency among the provinces, according to news sources.
Secretary Ashraf said that the Council of Common Interests (CCI) had dispatched these directions for telemetry system installation; adding that the process would be completed within a time frame of one year.
In response, the committee instructed the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) and all provincial irrigation units to present all the water distribution mechanism details to the provincial authorities and the guidelines governing them for the same purpose.

The meeting also discussed the matters of land lost to sea intrusion on various coastal districts of Sindh, construction of Sindh Barrage and its impact on sea intrusion reduction, Dasu Hydropower project status, the status of Phase II of Greater Thal Canal Project, and the construction of five small dams in Balochistan.

Further, the committee agreed to write to the provincial governments and urged the federal ministry to do the same to expedite the process of submitting the PC-1 of the projects to the federal executive for its approval.
