Taxila: The federal government has announced its decision to restore 1 million hectares of deforested land by 2030 through afforestation – as part of the Bonn Challenge 2030, according to a news source published today (September 8).

The decision was revealed by Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam Khan while inaugurating the 1.2 million tree plantation drive held near Attock.
The project to restore 1 million hectares of deforested and degraded land is being launched under the existing Forest Department’s Billion Tree Tsunami Programme (BTTP). The land restoration project would be completed in three years, at a cost of PKR 1.2 million.

Moreover, it was revealed that under this initiative some 5,000 trees will be planted alongside the Ghazi-Barotha water channel. Additionally, 5,000 fruit trees and two cricket stadiums will also be established.
As per the sources, the Bonn Challenge 2030 is a global environmental restoration initiative that is being organised by the Government of Germany and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) since 2011. Amin said that during the initial phase of the challenge, Pakistan has pledged to restore 0.35 million hectares of land in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
