Islamabad: The Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj Gul has stated that the government is looking to form a water table regulatory authority to stop wastage of water, a news source reported. This is the first time a government has taken initiative on the matter, the minister claimed. The authority will be able to regulate underground water, a much needed task considering the consistently lowering water table.
The minister was speaking at the inaugural event of the workshop on sustainable development. She said that the lack of regulation of underground water table and because of wastage of water, the water levels are depleting quickly.
She added that climate change is causing drought in several districts of Balochistan, Sindh and Punjab which has resulted in severe water shortage. Water cannot be found even after digging hundreds of feet.
In a related development, Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar has stated that every possible resource will be utilised to achieve the target of providing clean water to every citizen. He was chairing a meeting to review Water Authority Act. He said that a comprehensive law will be introduced to deal with water-related issues in the province.
