Islamabad: The federal and provincial governments have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Life Insurance Corporation (SLIC) on Wednesday (December 29) to expand universal healthcare for the public, according to news reports.

Under the said agreement, the people of Punjab, Islamabad, and Gilgit Baltistan (GB) would have access to PKR 1 million in health insurance per family annually from hospitals on the programme’s panel. Reportedly, SLIC won the contract for health insurance cards for the next three years (2022-2025). According to reports, Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan, as well as ministers for health from Punjab and the federal governments were present at the event.

It was announced that services covered by the Sehat Insaf Card and Qaumi Sehat Cards include open-heart surgeries, stent implantation, cancer management, neurosurgical procedures, burn management, accident management, dialysis, intensive care management, deliveries, C-section, and other medical/surgical procedures, as well as kidney transplants. There is an inter-provincial/inter-district portability option for receiving free services from any enrolled hospital in Pakistan. The announcement follows the premier’s recent visit to Punjab, where he offered insurance coverage for the whole province beginning January 1, 2022, under Sehat Sahulat Program. The government would completely fund the initiative, which will allow residents to receive health care from panel hospitals.
