Islamabad: Federal Minister for Housing & Works Tariq Bashir Cheema recently stated the government’s intention to provide affordable housing to 50% of the country’s homeless people from 2020, a news story reported. He added that the officials concerned fully supported Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan’s vision concerning the development of the Naya Pakistan Housing Programme (NPHP).

The minister revealed that the relevant authorities were expeditiously carrying out development work on the affordable housing units. He added that the government had also established the Naya Pakistan Authority (NPHA) to ensure timely completion of the project. He explained that the NPHA’s goal was to build five million houses, while the Housing & Works Ministry was working as a facilitator on this front.
Cheema said that the Federal Governmnet Housing Authority (FGEHF) and the Pakistan Housing Authority (PHA) would construct an additional two-and-a-half million houses during the upcoming two-and-a-half years. He added that both organisations were subordinate functions of the Ministry of Housing & Works. He also revealed that the government would begin transferring these houses to the citizens concerned in 2020.

The minister opined that construction of additional high-rise buildings could overcome the housing shortage in the country. He added that the authorities concerned have begun work on the housing project in Bara Kahu.
