Lahore: The Punjab government is looking to regulate powers of excise inspectors on accounts of irregularities reported in property-tax assessments, according to a news source. The decision is expected to curb corruption in property tax collection mechanism and also increase taxes.

Previously, the excise inspectors had been given certain authority in terms of TAX assessment. This autonomy gave them room to impose taxes on property as per their desecration. Some of these inspectors also allegedly misquoted facts in terms of properties’ occupation status. Furthermore, they also imposed varying taxes on houses located in the same area and followed no specific criteria to assess due taxes on commercial, residential, and leased property.

Sources claim that the computerisation of property data leaves no room for the involvement of excise inspectors in assessment of property taxes. The Excise Department believes that major reforms are required to improve situation in the mechanism of property tax assessments.
