Peshawar: The government has installed a modern waste management system at the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH), according to a news source. This system will ensure proper disposal of medical and general waste, including infectious waste produce. The system will reportedly protect people from diseases such as hepatitis.
The authorities purchased this system from a UK-based company for PKR 90.5 million. It will also be used to burn waste generated in the city’s other hospitals. This is the first system of its kind in Pakistan, and was recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO). It will burn 400 kilograms of waste per hour. Experts have already trained staff how to use it.
Director of LRH, Khalid Masud, said that the types of waste would be categorised before incineration. Disposal items such as needles, syringes, and drips sets, along with pharmaceutical waste, will be burned according to standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The system will run 12 to 16 hours a day.
