Islamabad: The federal government on Saturday (August 20) allowed the release of specified imported items with a penalty surcharge of 100% of the assessed value, according to news sources. This fine is slapped on products that have reached the ports after June 30 and by the end of July despite restrictions.

Ministry of Commerce has also issued a notice to this effect after the federal cabinet’s approval. Under these instructions, all mobile phones, vehicles, home appliances and other restricted luxury items will be released as per the revised monetary penalties. The notification also stated that other imported goods (excluding those mentioned above) will be released on payment of a surcharge of up to 35%, instead of the previously charged 15% fine charged for violating the ban. The notification added, “Items arrived after June 30 and up to July 31 will be released with a penalty surcharge of 25%”.

Previously, the government lifted the ban on the import of luxury and non-essential items on August 18, three months after the ban was placed.
