Islamabad: Climate Change Minister Senator Sherry Rehman shared that the federal cabinet has approved the country’s first-ever toxin waste management policy to reduce the threats to ecology and human life, according to a news story published in the leading newspapers on June 29.

As per the details, the National Hazardous Waste Management Policy formulated by the climate change ministry will help in controlling the movement of toxic materials including batteries, oil, plastics, hospital waste, and electronic waste. The policy will also help classify toxic materials and form disposal mechanisms.
Moreover, she revealed that the departmental framework will be devised and provincial and federal environmental protection agencies (EPAs) will be strengthened. She further added that a regulatory framework will be formed to ensure the implementation of the policy.

Reportedly, the centre will develop a national framework with the provinces along with a national plan to control licensing of hazardous waste imports. Climate Change Minister Rehman mentioned that the implementation of the said policy will benefit the Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) Plus compliance of the country. She hoped that the climate change ministry will come up with a national plan within three months.
