Karachi: The federal government is expected to finalise an agreement with a Russian consortium for laying down the North-South Gas Pipeline from Lahore to Karachi, according to a news source. The project’s signing ceremony is scheduled to be held in April.

The agreement finalistion was delayed as Dmitry Pumpyansky, who has been placed on the US sanctions watchlist, helms the firm TMK – previously part of the project. Therefore, the Law Ministry revoked its permission to be part of the pipeline.
Now, at the request of the petroleum division, the Russian government has put forward a consortium of two companies, LLC Eurasian Pipeline and Federal State Unitary Enterprise, to take part in the project, which is worth an estimated USD 2 billion.

This pipeline will run between Lahore and Karachi, and transport large volumes of gas supplies from the northern to the southern areas of Pakistan. It will have a diameter of 42 inches and will have the capacity to transport 1.2 billion cubic feet of gas per day.
