Islamabad: The government on Monday announced its decision to establish an authority for the development of barren islands located within the territorial waters of Pakistan, a news source reported. According to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, the executive would set up the Pakistan Islands Development Authority (PIDA) to facilitate the measure.

The Maritime Affairs Ministry revealed that it would propose the Pakistan Islands Development Authority Act 2020 to facilitate the establishment of PIDA. The tasks of the authority will include development of barren islands in the territorial waters of Pakistan, along with undertaking residential and infrastructure projects in these islands. Sources revealed that these initiatives would help revive over 50 allied industries as well as generating large-scaled skilled employment opportunities.

The government aims to curb the erosion of the islands caused by natural calamities. Once the projects begin, the government may replicate these for the coastal development of Karachi city. According to the details revealed, the federal government has provided an in-principle approval to the proposal submitted by the Maritime Affairs Ministry.
