Islamabad: The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) on Saturday (June 04) referred PKR 933.58 billion ‘Diamer Bhasha Dam-Power Generation Facilities’ to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), news sources reported. The ECNEC will give final approval of the project after deliberation.

The Diamer Bhasha Dam-Power Generation Facilities (DBD-PGF) will be built with the assistance of the Chinese state-owned firm – China Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC). When completed, the Diamer Bhasha Dam will generate 18,097 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of energy. The CDWP meeting, presided over by Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Prof. Ahsan Iqbal, gave final clearance to begin the project on a priority basis in order to alleviate the country’s imminent energy problem.

The meeting learned that the government intends to transfer 60% of all energy generated in the country to renewable energy resources, including hydropower, by 2030. According to the proposal, 30% of power will be generated by wind, solar, small hydropower, and biomass plants, while the remaining 30% will be generated by large-scale hydropower generating units.

It is worth noting that the government has started ten renewable energy projects in the country. The Diamer Bhasha Dam and the Mohmand Dam are two of the main projects being developed in partnership with Chinese companies. Furthermore, Chinese companies are also building several small hydropower plants in Pakistan.
