Islamabad: A Senate committee has instructed the relevant government departments to prioritise the development of the health and education sectors in the newly-merged tribal districts – in order to bring the region at par with the rest of the country, according to news sources.

These remarks were made during the meeting of Senate’s Standing Committee on States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON) at the Parliament House on Monday. Senator Taj Mohammad Afridi, who presided over the session, said that health and education sections have been neglected in the newly-merged tribal districts. He said that the government should focus on the development of the socio-economic status of the erstwhile-FATA.

The SAFRON ministry informed the committee that the tribal districts were allotted 4,048 seats in colleges and universities and 2,000 of them were filled. The committee members stated that seats in the government colleges and universities should be doubled and sought a list of universities that failed to comply with the quota.
