Rawalpindi: Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Ali has ordered the relevant authorities to make Murree a ‘tobacco-free zone’ in a bid to provide a healthy and clean environment to all the tourists, according to news published on Monday (December 13).

A district spokesman (whose name was not disclosed) stated that Murree is a scenic tourist resort and hill station, which attracts tourists from all over the country. By declaring Murree smoke free zone, it will reflect smoke-free Pakistan. He went on to say that it is part of a large Tobacco Smoke-free Cities of Pakistan initiative launched by the federal government.

The deputy commissioner has ordered the officials to take all necessary steps to make the tourist resort tobacco-free in collaboration with the Ministry of National Health. Moreover, DC Ali disclosed that all the recreational spots in Rawalpindi district will also be made tobacco-free areas, which will make it the first district to be smoke-free.
According to the spokesman, the DC has directed the authorities to install ‘no smoking’ signboards with a warning to strict action at the health centres, restaurants, cafés, sports stadiums, conference halls, hotels, government offices, court buildings, public transport vehicles, recreational areas, cinema halls, and other public places.
