Islamabad: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Railways has constituted a sub-committee to finalize the Terms of Reference (ToRs) for the construction of the Port Qasim Freight Terminal in Karachi, news sources reported on November 24.

The committee will assess the feasibility and strategy of Pakistan Railways (PR) in the development of various additional freight terminals with the help of the Karachi Port Trust in Port Qasim. In addition, the standing committee examined a project involving the building of a railway terminal at the Thar Coal project site to connect it to the railway network for efficient coal delivery to thermal power plants. According to the committee members, the PR must adapt its business model and include services that connect manufacturers with a variety of other stakeholders to become viable.

It is worth noting that PR is one of the largest government-owned corporations, having the most government land under its control. In recent years, the government has developed a plan to lease property to private enterprises to collect more revenue and make PR more profitable and cost-effective.
