Islamabad: The federal government recently provided its approval for an Atomic Energy Commission project involving the exploration of uranium in the Kohat plateau and the Bannu basin at an estimated cost of PKR 926.03 million — with PKR 200 million having been allocated for the venture under the budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2020-21, according to news sources.

Presently, the Atomic Energy Commission is working on 18 projects, for which the government has allocated funds worth PKR 23.08 billion in the new budget. Another uranium exploration project is underway in Dera Ghazi Khan with an estimated cost of PKR 794.9 million — of which PKR 140 million has been allocated in this year’s budget.
In addition, the government is also looking to invest in the development of nuclear medicine and radiation-related medical services.

Moreover, the government has also allocated funds for the development of various additional nuclear power projects. In this regard, PKR 18 billion has been allocated for the Karachi coastal power project 1 and 2, and PKR 1.5 billion has been allocated for the development of research rector-3 of 10 megawatts.
