Lahore: At the request of the Punjab government, Governor Punjab Muhammad Sarwar on Friday (November 12) approved the Housing Societies (Amendment) Ordinance 2021 and issued a gazette notification, news sources reported. The Punjab government will form a housing council rather than a commission to administer the operations of more than 1,400 unlawful housing societies, according to the new ordinance.

The government will be obligated to give the newly-established council/commission a secretariat and logistical assistance. As per the notification the housing council will consist of four members. It will be chaired by a retired judge, with additional members including a town planner, a civil engineer and a former environmental officer with 20 years of experience. Furthermore, Chamba House will be made the Secretariat of the Housing Societies Commission and Housing Council. The housing council will be able to hold further hearings on the decision of the housing commission.

The commission’s powers will include the ability to supervise housing plans, restore cemeteries, and impose penalties on housing societies that lack space for hospitals and mosques. Housing societies will have to provide a space for a cemetery within 5-kilometre-radius of the housing plan. According to the regulation, the societies will be required to offer playgrounds, parks, and green belts.
