Projects launched under the brand name of Ashiana Housing Scheme are prominent examples of the Pakistan government’s initiatives to provide affordable housing units to low-income groups of society. In this age of rampant price hikes and inflation, it has become increasingly difficult for the lower and middle classes to own a house, so the fact that the government is planning to address the housing needs of these people is something that deserves credit.
As part of its Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme initiative, the government is now working on a plan to develop 500,000 houses in different parts of the country to accommodate those who don’t have the resources to afford a home. And what’s more, the government will offer these housing units on easy instalments.
Federal Housing and Works Minister Mr Akram Durrani, while chairing a meeting fairly recently, said that the construction sites for the proposed housing units had been identified. The low-cost housing units would be developed in the Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Charsadda, Lahore, Dera Ismail Khan, Jhelum, Gwadar, Quetta, Karachi and Hyderabad districts.
According to a news report, Mr Durrani directed the officials concerned to start acquiring land so that the proposed project could be started immediately, adding that any hurdles that might come in the way of the project’s execution project should be dealt with before the next meeting, scheduled to be held on March 19.
The news source reported further that clear orders were issued to the officials concerned to complete the project within the tenure of the current government.
The current government, which has taken much flak for many of its policies, might yet be able to redeem itself if it manages to pull off this excellent initiative to cater to the housing needs of low-income groups. Let’s hope that the proposed project will be completed without delay, and that the beneficiaries of the project will be able to enjoy living in their homes soon.
